Rehab Considerations for the Athletic Post-Operative Knee


This 1-hour presentation will provide a background on the most common knee injuries in athletes and will focus on the rehabilitation and functional sport testing in post-surgical knee with returning the athletes to their sports.

After attending this call, the participant will:

  • Utilize evidence-based examination of knee and identify the common structures in knee injuries and the function of these structures and healing times with an emphasis on post-op knee injuries in the athletic population
  • Participants will gain knowledge and information about 3 specific sports knee injuries and exercises to return them back to sports
  • Participants will identify sports specific functional testing in order to return patients back to sports.
  1. Background in knee anatomy/function
    1. Prevalence/MOI
      1. Sports with knee injuries: basketball, soccer, skiing, volleyball (women)
    2. Younger athlete sport specialization
    3. Psychological response to a sports injury (make the exercises challenging and related to sport)
  2. ACL
    1. Functional overview
    2. Rehab considerations and RTS: Quad strength, HS strength, cutting, power
  3. Meniscus
    1. Functional overview
    2. Rehab considerations and RTS: Non-WB, rotational, HS component, cutting
  4. MCL
    1. Functional overview
    2. Rehab considerations and RTS: Rotational, lateral movements, strengthening VMO
  5. Return to Sport functional testing
    1. Y-balance
    2. SL triple hop test/SL triple hop crossover test
    3. WASHu Run test
    4. Agility and Change of Direction (COD) testing
