Evaluation Approach for Postpartum

This 1 hour webinar will present information regarding anatomical and physiological changes that occur in the acute/subacute postpartum phase. Additionally, medical diagnoses and associated restrictions common to this phase will be discussed, as well as implications for rehabilitation professionals. Subjective history questions appropriate for this patient population will be reviewed, including red flag screening. Assessment skills reviewed include external assessment of the pelvic floor muscles, diastasis recti abdominis, and C-section scar tissue, to ensure the clinician is capable of performing a comprehensive evaluation for this patient population.

By the end of this module, the participant will be able to:

  1.   Demonstrate understanding anatomical/physiological changes during the postpartum period.
  2. Demonstrate awareness of common diagnoses during postpartum and their associated restrictions (ie tearing, C-Section vs. vaginal birth, PP hemorrhage, etc.)
  3.   Identify and perform the basic evaluation assessments for the patient who is postpartum with appropriate modifications in positioning, exercise prescription, and physiological monitoring.
