CM: Concussion Management

This two-day introductory course in Concussion Management will cover the lifespan of a concussion from the acute injury to post-concussive management. The participants will obtain general neuro-anatomy and physiology of a concussion including prevalence and incidence rates. Following the “anatomy” of a concussion, the course will cover baseline performance testing and sideline tests to be performed for the concussed athlete, but will not only be singled out for athletes. The course will also cover clinical testing, including subjective and objective examinations, allowing for differential diagnosis and one-on-one assessment for the individual. A brief review of BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) and treatment will be covered for this population. Appropriate vestibular rehabilitation protocols will be addressed for this population with cognitive challenges applied. Finally, patient and family education on return to sport, school, and work will be discussed.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to correctly identify 5 key components of anatomy and physiology of the brain, cervical spine, and vestibular system in relation to concussion.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to correctly describe the role of vestibular anatomy in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).

By the end of the course, participants will be able to demonstrate the correct sequence of positions for canalith repositioning techniques for the posterior canal.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to perform 3 examination techniques to identify the presence of BPPV consistent with symptoms associated with concussions.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify 3 key interventions for concussive disorder ocular profile.

By the end of the course, given a case study of uncomplicated consussion, participants will be able to integrate 3 interventions for concusive disorder cervical profile into the patient’s management program consistent with multidisciplinary care and with appropriate return to activity recommendations.

By the end of the course, given a case study of uncomplicated concussion, participants will be able to list the components of appropriate screening for differential diagnosis including red flags.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to list 3 key studies in current management trends of acute non-complicated concussion.
